YELP LIKE A LADY

Do you yelp like a hen or a gobbler?

Traveling around the country doing trade shows and seminars I am often asked how one might improve their calling. Without fail the first thing that comes to mind in response to that question is "yelp like a hen not gobblers."

Yelping by both gobblers and hens has some distinct differences. Gobbler yelps tend to be deeper in pitch and much slower in speed while hen yelps tend to be much faster. There have been document cases of hen turkeys yelping as fast as 3 times a second. Simply put you can't yelp too fast but you can certainly yelp to slow.

Most beginning turkey callers yelp too slowly and their yelping in the spring woods resemble a gobbler more than it does a hen. I have had countless conversations with veteran turkey hunters and contest callers about yelping to a gobbler in the spring. All of us agree that there are probably more gobblers harvested in the spring woods by callers that are gobbler yelping when they believe they are hen yelping.

When you begin practicing your calling for the spring implant this thought in your mind: Yelp faster. Just when you think you are yelping too fast you have probably just became a hen in the woods and spring gobblers will notice the difference!
