Hunt For A Cure - Youth Turkey Hunt The 4th Annual Hunting For A Cure youth turkey hunt in Savannah, TN, was a special hunt for me. As a guide on the hunt, I was paired with a youth hunter, his parents, and a cameraman to capture the hunt on film. The first morning was windy and cold, but I had located some birds on a scouting trip the previous day so, despite the weather, I thought we had a good chance of seeing some action. At daybreak, we heard two longbeards gobbling near a food plot, so we made our way to the area and set up on the closest bird. My hunting partner, an anxious 8-year old boy, was eager to get into the game. The gobbler answered every call I threw out, and it sounded like he was on his way fast. As the bird moved closer, I was wishing I had my Casanova full strut decoy, which I had forgotten back home in Kentucky. The gobbler walked out into the green field in front of us and must have seen some movement - he was gone almost as fast as he entered. We worked one other gobbler that morning, but he had several hens with him and wouldn't commit to us. Even though we didn't harvest a bird, we had a great time and made some new friendships. Most of all, the hunt helped raise over $75,000 for the patients at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis, TN. I was fortunate enough to meet two special people on this hunt, Aaron Bell and his father Chris. Aaron is in remission with a rare form of cancer. After meeting kids like Aaron, I'm thankful to be involved with a company like Ol' Tom that supports fundraising events like the Hunt For A Cure. I'm looking forward to next year's hunt, and this time I Casanova will make the trip with me. |
